Most Common Questions we are being asked in-store
(FAQ article combined with the LiveChat feedback)
Here at Lekker Bikes we get asked many questions, both in-store and online through our LiveChat service. The purpose of this post is to address some of the main, and most common ones, to help you with more information on what you may be wanting to ask about our service and our bikes, as well as to help you choose the perfect bike for your commute.
Whether it be weekend cruising on the many picturesque bike paths surrounding Melbourne or Sydney, or commuting daily to work and back, Lekker Bikes have a wide range of options to suit whatever you may be searching for. Not only this, but our Melbourne and Sydney workshop at the rear of our Melbourne & Sydney Store, provides second to none bike service, helping to keep your bike fit, healthy and on the bike path. Read on to become a little more familiar with our bikes and our services, as well as to hopefully answer a few of the questions that you may have.
How many different styles of bikes do Lekker have?
We have two main styles of bikes. The first is our Jordaan and Sportief Series, offering both Men and Women a Dutch-style Cruiser Bike with an up-right riding position and adjustable handlebar. These come in either a 3 or 7-speed model, in a range of different colours, along with optional upgrades and accessories such as baskets, racks, locks and helmets.
Our second style is our Amsterdam Commuter Series, offering more efficient pedalling, with a lower handlebar height for a speedier ride around town. The Amsterdam Series come in either a 3, 7, or infinity turning gearing system. The premium models come with a belt-drive chain as standard, offering less maintenance than a regular chain system.
Should I buy the 3 or the 7-speed model?
It really depends on the type of terrain you will be riding. The 7-speed models do not exactly provide easier gearing, however they do provide a greater range in pedal resistance, and therefore more options, which can be very helpful if you are tackling some slightly hillier terrain, such as the hills surrounding Sydney. The 3-speed models are of course slightly simpler with less gearing options, which can make it easier for inner-city riding, particularly for a place such as Melbourne, which presents quite a flat grid.
How do the internal gearing systems work?
Each Lekker Bike comes standard with a premium Shimano Internal Gear Hub. Unlike the older-style external gear-shifting systems (derailleur system), the gears are enclosed inside a sealed system within the rear wheel. This makes for less maintenance, easy adjustment, less fragile, less and simpler parts and no greasy hands or dirty trousers!
What are the rules and regulations regarding riding a bike in Melbourne?
There are many safety regulations put in place if you are riding a bike in Melbourne & Sydney. This is of course for your own safety, as well as for the safety of other cyclists, pedestrians and motor-vehicle users. Whether you’re cycling on the road or on a bike path, it is helpful to get to know the rules and to obey them for the benefit of yourself and others. A neat outline of all regulations within Victoria, can be found on the VicRoads website.
Can I customise my bike?
Yes, you are welcome to.
What customisations, or upgrades can I make?
Most things are possible within reason. All Lekker Bikes Models come with optional upgrades that are specifically designed for each particular bike, such as leather grips, saddles, front and rear racks, baskets and tyres. However, despite these you are also welcome to make your own customisations. There are of course a few exceptions to this rule, as many components on our bikes must be fixed for the designs to function as they were intended to, as well as to meet the standards they must adhere to. This means, that we are unable to fit disc brakes or drop-handlebars onto our regular Amsterdam Model, as well as drop-handlebars on the Amsterdam Nuvinci Model.
Does Lekker offer bike servicing?
Yes. We have a workshop at the rear of our Melbourne and Sydney Shop, where we offer bike servicing not only to customers who purchase Lekker Bikes, but also to anybody interested in getting their bike serviced. The service fee in our Melbourne Shop is $99.
Does my Lekker come with a free service?
Yes, all Lekker Bikes come with a free first service. After this, the standard service fee applies, which is $99 in our Melbourne and Sydney Shop.
How often should I pump my tyres, and to what pressure?
We recommend checking and if need, pumping your tyres once each week. Tyre pressure is measured using PSI (pounds-per-square-inch). The recommended PSI for our Sportief and Jordaan models is 45 – 65. For the Amsterdam Series, it is 100.
Is more maintenance required with the ‘Belt Drive’ commuter model bikes?
No, using a belt drive rather than a regular chain-drive system will actually require less maintenance, as there is no need for oiling the belt. There is also less noise, has a longer life-span as well as no greasy fingers.
How many times a year should my bike be serviced?
We recommend taking your bike to be checked and serviced at least twice a year, to prepare it for the summer or winter season. As mentioned above, with every Lekker Bike purchase, included is a free first service.
Do Lekker bikes meet Australian standards?
Yes, all bikes come fitted with all components required to meet Australian Bicycle Standards. This includes such requirements as ground clearance, toe clearance, protective guards, pedals, steering systems, reflectors as well as other specifications which can be found here.
Do Lekker bikes come with a warranty?
Yes, all Lekker Bikes comes with a 2-year warranty. If you find something breaks or you are having issues with your bike within this time frame, upon discussion of the issue, we are able to replace the broken part/s at no cost.
What materials are the bikes made with?
All Lekker Bikes are made with a 100% aluminium frame and fork, as well as components where possible. The use of aluminium prevents corrosion, allowing our bikes to be ridden all year round without the need to worry about weather changing for the worse.
What if I don’t like my bike?
For whatever reason, if you find you are not satisfied with your Lekker Bike, you are free to return it within 30 days of the purchase date. It will greatly help resolve issues if the bike is in perfect working condition, as it was when it was first purchased.

How does the Lekker E-Bike work?
The Lekker E-Bike is just like our regular Jordaan series bicycle, however with a powerful front hub motor installed to provide differing levels of pedal assist, helping you to get around town even easier, with less resistance and a little more power.
What is the top speed of the E-Bike?
The top speed of the Lekker E-Bike is 25km/h.
Does the E-Bike charge whilst I ride it?
No, they do not recharge whilst riding. Moving the pedals does not charge them. It requires charging of the battery to operate as intended.
How long must I charge the E-Bike battery?
Full charge of the Lekker E-Bike battery will take approximately 3.5 – 4.5 hours. We recommend fully charging your E-Bike battery before first use, so that it works as intended.
How long can you ride with one charge of the battery?
Generally between 50 and 100kms per full battery charge. Of course, this can vary and greatly depends on things such as rider weight, the level of pedal assistance (between 1 and 5), the gradient of the terrain, as well as the power output of the rider.
Can the Battery be removed?
Yes, the battery can be safely removed to allow for easier charging. For example, if you would like to store your E-Bike at home in the Garage. To do so, simply insert and turn the key when in the key-slot and are able to slide out the battery from under the rear rack.
